Transforming a Desk Drawer into a Keyboard Tray
You can convert your desk drawer into a keyboard try so you do not have to spend money on a pricey computer desk. You are going to need the following items for this project: a desk with a drawer, screwdriver, cabinet latches, saw, and drill. Follow the simple instructions outlined below so you can transform that drawer in your desk into a useful keyboard tray.
Start by taking out the drawer and cutting its front off. Get the cabinet latches and line them up then attach them to the inside part of the drawer as well as the inside of its front. The next step you need to do is to drill a hole in the drawer that would be large enough to allow the cord and its plug to pass through. If your drawer happens to have rails on the bottom, you can just drill into the drawer bottom the pass the cord under the drawer. But if your drawer does not have any rails under it, you can drill through the back of the drawer and the back of the desk. So, whenever you need to use the computer, you just have to pull out the drawer then pop off the cover on the front. Once you are done using the computer, place the cover back on the front then push the drawer back inside.
Go to thrift shops or second-hand stores to look for a good drawer that will allow you to install this homemade keyboard tray. If the desk you want has an L shape, then you can use the side drawer for your tray. Just cut off the side of the drawer then add braces so you can stabilise the other three sides. This way, you will not need to attach any cabinet latches. Furthermore, if you can get a desk that has multiple drawers or use a file cabinet desk, you will be able to get more storage space for other stuff. You can then keep important papers, pens, staplers, and other items you usually need to have on hand within the different cabinets. Having this kind of desk in your home office will definitely be helpful in organising your things.
